Dental Sedation and What You Should Know about It

Smile8

Dental sedation is a treatment that is used to help patients relax during your other dental treatment. Several levels of sedation are available to meet your needs, including minimal, moderate and deep sedation. You may be a candidate for dental sedation if you have dental anxiety or a phobia, suffer from jaw problems, need long or complex treatments or want to complete multiple treatments at once.

Inhaled sedation is the lightest form of sedation. A special gas is administered through a mask that is placed over your nose. You will feel warm and relaxed almost immediately, and the gas leaves your system quickly when your treatment is finished. Inhaled sedation is the only type of sedation where you can safely drive yourself home after the procedure.

If you choose another type of sedation, someone else will need to drive you to and from your appointment for your safety. Oral sedation is a form of sedation that uses oral anti-anxiety medications. The dose is adjusted according to your needs, and you will be instructed to take one before the appointment. You may even fall asleep during your appointment with oral sedation, but you can be easily awakened as needed.

IV sedation is a deeper form of sedation. It is administered through a vein and works quickly. You will be unconscious during the treatment, but we will continually monitor you and adjust the dosage as needed. Sedation can help you get the dental care you need, even if you suffer from having a severe phobia.
