What Makes Veneers Effective?

0235.jpgVeneers have become a popular cosmetic option for fixing gapped, chipped, discolored, and crooked teeth. The reasons they are so effective are because they are resilient and easy to apply.

Veneers are made from a strong porcelain material that can be made to match the color of your existing teeth. Though veneers are ultra-thin, they are extremely durable. And because porcelain is non-porous, veneers are also highly resistant to stain. Veneers are given added strength because they are bonded directly to your natural teeth. In order to place them, a thin layer of tooth enamel is first removed. The amount of enamel that is removed is about a half a millimeter, which is about the same size as the veneer itself. After they are bonded to your teeth, veneers can last for several decades if properly maintained.

Another reason veneers are so effective is because of the relative ease of the procedure. Sure, in order to have veneers placed it is necessary to have some tooth enamel removed, but that is relatively minor compared to the alternatives. For gapped teeth and mildly crooked teeth, it is much easier and cheaper to have veneers placed than it is to go through years of orthodontics work. Indeed, some dentists even refer to veneers as instant orthodontics.
