Once you have been diagnosed with sleep apnea, there are a wide range of options available to you to help treat the condition. Here is a look at some of the most common options available to patients.
These machines, called Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, is a bedside device with a tube going to a mask that continuously forces a gentle stream of air through your air passageway, thereby preventing the collapse of the throat which causes obstructive sleep apnea. This is exceptionally effective, but can also cause people to have difficulty sleeping as a result of it size and position.
These devices, which our South Bay sleep apnea expert can provide, hold the jaw and tongue in positions which keep them from blocking the airways. These devices are particularly effective at dealing with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea, and are an excellent option for someone unable to sleep with a CPAP machine.
Another sleep apnea treatment is surgery, which has mixed results and should not be considered unless all other options have failed to address the issue. Some patients have even been successful at what is called positional therapy which involves preventing the patient from sleeping on their back.
Alternatives to actual treatment, however, are available, but would take work on your behalf. This is because some of the biggest risk factors for sleep apnea involve these things and addressing them would provide you a host of additional benefits besides. Namely, these involve losing weight if you are overweight, stopping smoking if you do, and stop drinking alcohol within a couple hours of going to bed.
