How are Dental Implants Placed?

Dental implants are the gold standard in tooth replacement options available today, out-performing dentures and bridges alike in all regards. This is because the implant is placed directly into the supportive structures of the tooth it replaces, even being inserted into the jaw bone itself. Our dentist in Agoura Hills provides dental implants, which are done essentially as follows.
1. An incision is made in the gums at the place the implant will be placed. This is to expose the jaw bone below it.
2. A metal post is placed into the jaw, ideally in the socket of the vacated tooth. The post is normally made of titanium, which bonds securely with the bone.
3. The gums are then given time to heal fully for the next couple of months. Once they have done so, an abutment is installed on the post. This abutment is what holds the restoration to the implanted metal post.
4. After the abutment comes the restoration. If only one tooth is being replaced, the restoration will be a crown. If more than one tooth is being replaced, the restoration could take the form of a bridge, partial dentures or full dentures.
