Causes of TMJ Disorders

TMJ is a disorder that occurs in the jaw joint, and causes pain and discomfort in the jaw and surrounding areas. Despite the fact that millions of Americans are suffering from the disorder, experts are unsure exactly why it occurs. We do know, however, that patients with TMJ typically have inflammation in the joint, which arises due to one of the following issues:

• Physical injury affecting the jaw
• Misaligned teeth
• Bruxism (habitual grinding or clenching of the teeth)
• Poor posture
• Stress
• Severe arthritis in other areas
• And others

Treatment for the disorder is received best when our TMJ dentist in Thousand Oaks can determine the cause. For example, TMJ that occurs due to pressure on the joint from misaligned teeth can be eliminated with the use of braces or a similar appliance. Grinding and clenching the teeth due to stress or bruxism (which usually happens at night, unknown to the patient), can be solved with relaxation techniques and a night guard to block the teeth from meeting. In some extreme cases, surgery is necessary in order to physically adjust the joint and eliminate any internal causes of infection.
